The APA Guidelines Explained, third edition

On July 8, the 3rd revised edition of The APA Guidelines Explained: A practical guide to citation in higher education was published. As with previous editions, the publication has been released as a free download via and in a ring binder, available for purchase for €4.05

There are about 20 revised and new APA guidelines (APA7) regarding source citation. The most important changes are listed on the website. In addition to explanations of the guidelines, this edition provides over 100 examples and covers new topics, such as report formatting. The ring binder contains a fold-out Reference Guide that can be used to quickly find the correct paragraph and can also be used as a bookmark.

The 3rd revised version of The APA Guidelines Explained, was compiled by 11 information specialists from 10 colleges in collaboration with SURF and the Society of College Libraries (SHB), with permission of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Reference styles

When using the work of others, a correct reference to the source is mandatory. The citation of sources can be done using different reference styles. Each style gives you an opportunity to cite your sources correctly. The most commonly used reference style in the Netherlands is the APA style.

However, there are more reference styles in use. On this page you will find a brief overview of the most commonly used styles.
